    突破性创新是培育新质生产力,实现中国高水平科技自立自强的战略基石。数字化转型通过推动组织惯例的颠覆性变革,能够为企业突破性创新带来全新的组织条件和机会窗口。本文基于动态能力理论,在采用新颖的专利文本相似度算法全面测算中国企业突破性创新指数的基础上,实证检验了企业数字化转型对突破性创新的影响效果及内在机制。研究结果表明:(1)数字化转型能够显著提升企业突破性创新水平;(2)由组织感知能力、利用能力和变革能力所塑造的动态能力提升效应,是数字化转型促进企业突破性创新的重要渠道;(3)异质性分析发现,数字化转型对大型企业、民营企业和动态环境中经营企业的突破性创新的激励效果更强;此外,与大数据、物联网和云计算等数字技术应用类型相比,人工智能技术作为一类“发明方法的发明”,能够更好发挥赋能企业突破性创新的效果;(4)数字化转型通过提升企业突破性创新能力,能够进一步转化为企业全要素生产率。本文深入揭示了数字化转型使能企业突破性创新的组织过程黑箱,为中国企业摆脱关键核心技术领域“卡脖子”困境提供了重要的实践路径。

    Abstract:

    Breakthrough innovation is the strategic cornerstone for cultivating new quality productive forces and achieving China's high level of self-reliance and strength in science and technology. By driving disruptive changes in organizational practices, enterprise digital transformation can lead to new organizational conditions and windows of opportunity for breakthrough innovation. Based on dynamic capability theory, this paper empirically examines the effect and mechanism of digital transformation on Chinese enterprises' breakthrough innovation based on the comprehensive measurement of the breakthrough innovation index of Chinese enterprises using a novel patent’s abstract text similarity algorithm. The study results show that (1) digital transformation can significantly increase the level of breakthrough innovation in enterprises. (2) Dynamic capabilities shaped by the organization's capability to sense, seize, and transform are important channels through which digital transformation fosters breakthrough innovation in enterprises. (3) Heterogeneity analysis reveals that digital transformation has a stronger incentive effect on breakthrough innovation for large firms, private firms, and firms operating in dynamic environments; furthermore, artificial intelligence, as a type of "invention of invention," is better at empowering breakthrough innovation in enterprises than the types of digital technology applications such as big data, IoT, and cloud computing. (4) Digital transformation can further enhance enterprises' total factor productivity by enhancing their breakthrough innovation capabilities. This paper reveals the black box of the organizational process of digital transformation that enables breakthrough innovation in enterprises and provides an important practical path for Chinese enterprises to tackle key core technical issues of "stuck neck."
